Toyota embraces the technology of open source software for the in-car systems
The Silicon Review
02 June, 2017

Tech growth has never declined, but has evolved with new additions every day. Even in the self driving technologies it has made use of the modern software and AI systems. Toyota has made a significant decision to back the use of open source software for its in-car systems.  The company’s decision was to make use of a Linux-based, open-source technology platform in its revamped version of Camry sedan. Toyota will according to Reuters, use the Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) system in its Camry sedan. And it plans to expand the platform to other Toyota and Lexus vehicles in North America and other parts of the world.  This might be the beginning of a new era in the automobile technology, the use of open source software and a challenge to other autotech players.

The AGL system can keep track of the users data which otherwise could be captured by Apple or Google. The flexibility in the customization of the software is yet another factor which keeps it on high demand. The current strategy is to expand the platform to other Toyota and Lexus vehicles in North America and other parts of the world. It seems that AGL will not only allow for traditional systems, such as playing the radio or connecting a smartphone to the car, but can also be used to support emerging technologies such as self-driving functions and connected car services.  With the ten global carmakers signed in to the project, AGL is expected to change the automobile tech in a progressive way.
