Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla Inc. has launched a new company called Neuralink Corp. The entrepreneur is pushing the company towards the augmentation of artificial intelligence. Neuralink Corp. is hoping to implant tiny electrodes in the human brain that may one day upload and download thoughts, according to the Wall Street Journal reports. The company is developing “neural lace” technology which could make it possible for humans to have a better cognitive ability.

“Creating a neural lace is the thing that really matters for humanity to achieve symbiosis with machines,” says Elon Musk. He believes that the advancements in AI might ultimately overtake us and pose a threat to humanity. So, he has come up with the brain-computer interface technology to keep humans in pace with the leap in AI developments. The interface will help humans to directly communicate with machines in much powerful ways. It is capable of doing much more than that. By improving our cognitive abilities, such a technology can also help us fight neurological diseases, restore movement to paralyzed limbs, control prosthetics and transform us beyond our imagination.

Neuralink is registered as a medical research company in California. For now, it is focused on innovating new software and surgery methods to develop devices that could be implanted to make the brain-computer interface a reality. Neuroscientists believe it’s tough to understand the functioning of the neurons in the human brain and planting of electrodes in the brain may be invasive. So, the idea of neural lace still has a long way to go.
