In the wake of SpaceX and Boing Co flying astronauts to International Space Station, the United States space agency NASA plans to review their workplace safety culture, prior to crew test flights.

“We fully expect our commercial partners to meet all workplace safety requirements in the execution of our missions, including the adherence to a drug-free environment,” said NASA in a statement.

The report was published by Reuters on Tuesday.

According to The Washington Post, which first reported about the NASA review, said that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration might have considered reviewing the companies after witnessing the recent behaviour of SpaceX’s founder Elon Musk, who, allegedly, was smoking marijuana and drinking whiskey during a live podcast, in September this year.

NASA under its commercial crew program selected Boeing and SpaceXas the two main contractors to send astronauts to space in the coming months, using their Starliner and Dragon spacecraft respectively.

In an emailed statement sent to Reuters Boing said that it ensures the integrity, safety and quality of its products, its staff and their work environment. The company further said it is committed to mission success as NASA’s partner.

SpaceX could not be contacted for comments, but it sent a statement to the news agency.

“We are confident that our comprehensive drug-free workforce and workplace programs exceed all applicable contractual requirements,” SpaceX said.
