Tencent makes its own pair of video-recording sunglasses
The Silicon Review
03 November, 2018

One of the biggest tech companies in China, Tencent has launched its own pair of smart sunglasses which is called the Weishi smartglasses. They are quite similar in features to Snap’s Spectacles. The smart glasses have a camera on the front which can record videos just like Spectacles. Snap’s Spectacles didn’t make much profit; its sales dropped to as low as 42,000 per quarter. Moreover, the first generation lost the firm nearly $40 million in unsold pairs. This discouraged the company to produce more specs.

Unlike the first generationSpectacles, the Weishi smart sunglasses don’t highlight the camera with an ugly looking yellow ring. Instead, they are black colored witha cat eye type of frame, more like the second generation of Spectacles.Tencent’sWeishi presently lags behind a Chinese short video sharing platform, TikTok which is witnessing huge success in the market. The idea behind the smart glasses is obvious as Weishi means “micro videos” in Chinese. It is video sharing app and the aim is to promote users to record short videos and upload to Weishi to beat its competitors.

Tencent has been Snap’s largest investor having 17 percent share in the company. The Weishi glasses will be available in the market on November 11th. This day marks as Alibaba’s Singles Day which is the largest shopping event in China.
