Amazon Rolls Out a new Product for Doctors
The Silicon Review
11 December, 2018

Amazon has rolled out a new product exclusively for doctors. The product is the company’s latest range of data analytic product which is developed to scour unstructured data within electronic medical records (EMRs). It will assist doctors to gain insights and treat the patients more effectively.

The natural-language processing engine (the company’s new comprehend Medical AWS cloud services) is created to read physician notes, patient prescriptions, audio interview transcripts, and radiology reports. Its mechanism utilizes a machine learning algorithm to share accurate and relevant medical information to healthcare providers.

Announced on Tuesday, the new product is the company’s one of 13 new machines learning software products.

As per Amazon, the Comprehend Medical has the potential to extract anatomy, patient’s medical conditions treatments, tests, PHIs and procedures from unstructured records, or records that aren't in a structured database format.  It can arrange in an easy-to-read, spreadsheet-like format.

A few years ago, the use of EMRs was only 10 percent in hospitals, as they dependent on paper records. But currently, more than 80 percent of the hospitals and physicians utilize EMRs. In 2009, the HITECH Act (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) emphasized healthcare units to use EMRs and withheld medical incentives from various units if they failed to set up EMRs.

Last year, Seattle-based Cancer Institute, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center used Amazon’s Comprehend Medical in pilot studies and got fast and accurate results.
