Iota Raise New Fundings Worth $15million for a new Sensor

A California-based company called Iota Biosciences has raised $15M in a series A funding. The funding comes after the company developed millimeter-wide sensors that have the capacity to live more or less permanently inside the body and transmit wirelessly what it detects.

Now, the company intends to start human trialsof the new development with the fundings. The fundings round was carried out by Bold capital partners, Shanda, Ironfire, Horizons Ventures, andAstellas. The funding round was completed in May this year itself but only just announced.

The new development was led by researchers at UC Berkeley. Co-founders Jose Carmena and Michel Maharbiz were working on improving the state of microelectrodes. Medical and experimental sciences use these microelectrodes for various purposes like monitoring and stimulating muscle tissues and nerves.

An array of microelectrodes inside the brain could detect early signs of a seizure, and around the heart, one could test the exact rhythms of cardiac tissues.

These microelectrodes might sound small by their name but they are not small. Its tips are often connected to bigger machines or battery powered packs. These devices can stay inside the body for a longer period of time due to various complications associated with them.

The latest funding will help the company to have a production-ready version of the device ready from its prototype phase in order to present to the Food and Drug Administration after 18 months.
