MIT Researchers Develops a Machine which can recreate Paintings from Photographs

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing day by day, in the latest development; the technology was used by a team of researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to develop a system which has the potential to create a replica of photos.

The system creates a replica from a single photo, where people visiting the museums or any art gallery can capture a snap of their favorite picture and also print new copies complete with paint textures.

The system is dubbed as Repaint. It is ML( Machine Learning)- based system which has the capability to recreate the exact colors of a painting. After that, the system also prints the photo using a high-end 3D printer. The printer uses half-toning, a process which can output thousands of colors.

But, the researchers found a more effective technique to capture a fuller spectrum of Degas and Dali. A special technique known as “color-monitoring”, which was created by the researchers themselves was used to carry out the work. After that, the researchers combined their method with a technique called “halftoning”, which was found a decade ago. The results showed the process was effective in capturing the nuances of the colors.

While coming to “color-monitoring” and “halftoning”, “color-monitoring” involves using a 3-D printer and 10 different transparent inks stacked in very thin layers, much like the wafers and chocolate in a Kit-Kat bar. And in “halftoning”- an image is created by tons of little ink dots, rather than continuous tones.
