The Silicon Review
03 December, 2018

In order to expand into mobile strategy games, “Angry Birds” maker Rovio Entertainment buys Finnish game studio PlayRaven. The company announced on Friday, according to a report published by Reuters.

Rovio has been hit by tough competition while taking on its rivals. The company’s high dependency on the Angry Birds brand also has restricted it a smooth ride when it comes to positive growth.

As per the report, it is said that Rovio plans to develop a strategy game that would have nothing to do with the Angry Birds brand.

Mikko Setala, Rovio spokesman, said the recent acquisition has equipped Rovio team of a skillset coming from PlayRaven staff that understood how to make strategy games.

PlayRaven staff understood what attracted customers, skills and knowledge, the spokesman added. It will take Rovio years to reach that level, he further added.

The acquisition deal was not disclosed.

Rovio Entertainment, set up in 2003, is a Finnish video game developer based in Espoo. It was founded by Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen and Kim Dikert– alumni of Helsinki University of Technology. The company is famous for the Angry Birds franchise. The franchise was first launched in 2009.

PlayRaven, incorporated in 2013, was founded by Finnish game industry veterans. It has a total of 25 employees. The company has been funded by Northzone and London Venture Partners.
