At its annual developer event, re:Invent, AWS had unveiled its cloud based graph database and now it is made generally available. Amazon Neptune is a high-performance graph database which is designed to develop insights and form associations among highly connected datasets. It allows the users to store billions of related data types in a graph format and access them in a single operation with milliseconds of latency. As the sixth database offering from Amazon, it can compete with many open-source graph databases like Neo4J as well as with Microsoft’s Azure Cosmos DB.

Neptune is compatible with a wide range of applications and the service promises recovery from failure in 30 seconds and 99.99 percent availability. “As the world has become more connected, applications that navigate large, connected data sets are increasingly more critical for customers”, said Raju Gulabani, vice president, Databases, Analytics, and Machine Learning at AWS. “We are delighted to give customers a high-performance graph database service that enables developers to query billions of relationships in milliseconds using standard APIs, making it easy to build and run applications that work with highly connected data sets.

Neptune’s standard use cases are social networking applications, recommendation engines, fraud detection tools, knowledge graphs and networking applications that need to map the complex topology of an enterprise’s infrastructure. After its debut, Neptune gained many customers including Samsung, AstraZeneca, Intuit, Siemens, Person, Thomson Reuters and Amazon’s own Alexa team. Amazon Neptune is now available in the US East (Northern Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), and EU (Ireland) regions, and will soon reach more regions in the coming year.
