DARPA set to replace conventional wheels with interchangeable tracks

DARPA set to replace conventional wheels with interchangeable tracks
The Silicon Review
27 June, 2018

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) unveiled some new and groundbreaking technology to improve the survivability of military vehicles traversing through some of the most inhospitable terrain. The new fittings look like something from a science fiction movie. They feature an interchangeable wheel-track system on troop carriers and other deployment vehicles.

Being a part of the United States Department of Defense, DARPA has long since spearheaded the adoption of advanced technology in warfare. The newest rollout, which is part of DARPA’s Ground X-Vehicle Technologies initiative, is intended to give soldiers the decisive edge when it comes to mobility and deployment. It allows vehicles to switch round wheel tracks to a triangular configuration without compromising on speed or maneuverability. While round wheel tracks are good for an even or a flat terrain, triangular shaped tracks are excellent for maneuvering on uneven ground, hilly regions, desert-like conditions as well as swampy grounds. This cutting edge technology is product of Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center’s collaboration with DARPA.

In addition to wheels, another design being considered is the V-PANE (Virtual Perspectives Augmenting Natural Experiences) that renders a real-time model of the surroundings using onboard cameras and LIDAR, thereby eliminating the need for windows to bolster security.

These designs are extensively researched upon to help United States military personnel deployed worldwide to have enhanced survivability and improved tactical capabilities.
