Reddit is all set to run its News App under beta testing
The Silicon Review
26 June, 2018

After introducing an alpha version of its News App for iOS, Reddit is now launching a beta version of the same in order to establish a dedicated place where its users can get access to a variety of trending and relatable news.

Reddit has a number of forums called subreddits that users can subscribe to in order to get access to relevant news information without having to surf the web. In order to decide which news will be published in their beta version, they set up an algorithm to determine the most clicked posts and came up with a list of around thousand domains of media publishers.

Reddit’s News App also hosts various community discussions that revolve around a variety of topics like Business, Science, Technology, Sports, Entertainment, Gaming, etc. With the help of these domains, Reddit can help surface those communities where news is discussed the most. These communities function on various policies and guidelines in order to give rise to healthy and significant discussions.

The News tab organizes the posts on the basis of their categories making it easier for users to filter the news for themselves and configure the app according to their preferences. It appears as a scannable list of stories and information embedded with a comments section. They have quite an upper hand in this area of content publication since the only other social media networks where news discussions take place are Facebook and Twitter while other News apps do not provide tools like a comments section for discussion.

The launch of Reddit’s beta app at a time when Facebook is discontinuing its Trending Topics feature will give them quite an edge over various news portals. However, we cannot be sure of how it will fair with respect to other prominent alternatives like Google and Apple News.
