“Social Media Is an Illness and Will Cause Health Issues”, Says MacManus

“Social Media Is an Illness and Will Cause Health Issues”, Says MacManus
The Silicon Review
23 July, 2018

Richard MacManus is a tech columnist who is quite famous for analyzing social media illness. According to him the best option for all is to use unfollow and mute buttons. Facebook itself admitted that social media is bad for every user. This shows that the biggest social media company themselves agree to the fact that such platforms are really dangerous in terms of health and user addiction. Not to mention the mental stability’s balance is broken because of fake news, group thinking, constant outrage, polarised opinions, virtue signalling, tribalism and other such internet illness.

Facebook did promise to elevate the conversation in 2018, but we are already halfway through 2018 and yet we don’t see anything happening, says Richard. According to reports, Facebook’s users are billions in number and among them daily active users’ count is up to 1.45 billion on average for March 2018. Facebook sees a 13 percent rise in the number of users every year. But to be more accurate, Facebook attains more users every quarter. Hence, we can conclude that there is no financial or market incentive for it to change.

The actual number of daily users is mostly teens and underage users. It is evident that there is certain content that these users shouldn’t be seeing. This is not only in the US but in various high developing countries as well. As technology grows, information that shouldn’t be going to certain users is reaching them. This is not the right track we are going in terms of health and mental stability. Will there be any change? Let us wait and watch.
