The government green lights an app for birth control
The Silicon Review
14 August, 2018

The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) green lit a mobile app that can be a form of birth control. Natural Cycles was developed by Swedish particle physicist Dr. Elina Berglund who is also a scientist at the prestigious CERN (Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire) or the European Organization for Nuclear Research. It has now been granted an approval to be marketed as a contraceptive in the United States. It was already in use in some European countries and this will be its first foray in the US.

It analyses menstrual cycles using an algorithm by taking in data given by women. This data would include specifics such as body temperature and monthly menstrual cycles. The app determines the days during which a woman is most fertile and so likely to conceive. In other words, it tells women the days that would be safer to have intercourse or use protection.

The algorithm used by Natural Cycles has been developed by assessing the data from over 15,000 women and fine-tuned after additional research. This app could really hit off given the recent political stance and pricing regarding birth control measures and abortion. Natural Cycles may just be the app that American couples were waiting for in the current right-wing Republican government.
