Mayfield Robotics, the makers of Kuri will cease operation soon
The Silicon Review
22 August, 2018

The company behind Kuri, an adorable home robot is going to shut down by October. Mayfield announced the sad news on its blog. Recently, it even announced that the company is stopping the production of Kuri home robot.

Mayfield Robotics, a part of Bosch’s startup platform was born in 2015. Since Kuri Robot’s production came to a closure, the company struggled to reinstate its business within Bosch. Since late 2017, the company is trying to be an established firm, seeking support and financial assistance from a couple of company. Unfortunately, all the efforts were futile. As the company is unable to find external partners to provide financial support for long-term technology development, it will cease all its operation by October 31st.

Though Kuri, a smart home robot with a cute face and the movable body was built for smart assistance functionalities, it couldn’t deliver what it promised. The robot was designed to work as a moving home security camera, monitored through the Kuri app but it failed miserably as per the demonstration as it was not much different than a Bluetooth speaker.

Those who preordered Kuri were given refunds when it’s production was stopped in July. To cover the loss of the employees of Mayfield Robotics; they are offered severance packages and an option to work for Bosch for the open positions. It is an extremely sad ending to the robot which was thought to have a lot of potentials but was much sooner outpaced by similar and cheaper home assistance robots in the market.
