Another potential competitor to Facebook can be Openbook

Since the inception of Facebook, it has continued to dominate the social space. But there are a few social media giants emerged to give tough competition to Facebook’s popularity, for example, Twitter and Snapchat. But, none was able to seize Zuckerberg’s throne. To enjoy this dominance in the social networking market, Facebook has even made some major acquisitions by overtaking Whatsapp and Instagram.

The ‘so-called’ dominance has not scared the smaller startups to build a better social network, a platform that would allow making friends in a safer environment. The latest dreamer with this mission is Openbook. The motto is to create an open source network that reimagines social media life to make it safer, honest and customizable. Currently, Openbook is just an idea with a small self-funded team and a prototype to kickstart the ambitious project. Openbook’s vision is to safeguard privacy by eliminating ever watchful ads and strategies to continuously track peoples’ activities and interests.

If the core idea is talked about, there is nothing new exactly. But as the popular social media companies tend to be more data consuming, the new idea in the face of Openbook seems to make more sense. The mastermind behind Openbook is Joel Hernández; it was his vision to build an alternative social network manifesto and he has been dreaming about it for a couple of years now.

The team of Openbook created the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign page, where Phil Zimmermann, the chief cryptography expert talked about the drawbacks of the current landscape of for-profit social platforms. “We need an alternative to the social network work revenue model that we have today,” he added.
