HTC unites with Facebook’s Oculus Rift to increase the target audience for its VR subscription product

Taiwanese hardware company, HTC, is aspiring to develop a business model to deal with the downs in the VR market space. It has therefore opened its doors to Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, its major competitor in the VR space, with the belief that their unity only can help take the VR genre forward.

HTC’s Viveport VR store was launched in order to offer a market for VR games and apps. Now its subscription service allows gamers to download a few titles per month from its store on a rolling basis. Though VR didn’t find much popularity as some experts had expected, HTC’s Viveport seemed to have the potential to improve hardware sales for the company through software curation. Having gripped to this idea for quite a long time, HTC now plans to expand the offerings to the Rift owners hoping to generate additional revenue from them.

Viveport offers a curated library that contains more than 1400 diverse VR titles out of which 200 titles have been tested and are compatible with the Oculus Rift. This enables Oculus Rift users to take up the Viveport subscription and enjoy its service. Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport, said, “With Viveport Subscription, Oculus Rift owners can avoid two of virtual reality’s most discussed issues – trailing new content and cost. By choosing five titles a month from Viveport Subscription's curated library, consumers can discover great VR content while saving hundreds of dollars.
