Huawei: Trying To Gain the Trust of Australian Government

Huawei: Trying To Gain the Trust of Australian Government
The Silicon Review
18 June, 2018

Australian government is planning to construct a 5G wireless network and one of the companies that pitched in for this project is the Chinese firm, Huawei. Australia’s National Broadband Network declined Huawei’s tender in 2012 because of the cybersecurity issues raised by Australian intelligence agency, ASIO.

The Chinese telecommunication giant is almost guaranteed to be excluded from supplying any equipment to the 5G network (as per recent reports). But Huawei responded with a letter to Australia arguing that these national security risks are ill-informed and aren’t accurate. Furthermore, these are not based on facts and hence Huawei feels that they need to make certain changes in their product marketing.

Many concerns have been raised during the visit of Australian Prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull to the US. These issues were mainly regarding the supply of equipment for the 5G network from Huawei. Almost six intelligence chiefs that include the head of CIA, NSA and FBI testified against Huawei. This is what triggered the Australian’s defense and Pentagon to decline Huawei’s supply. But many are aware of what Huawei brings to the market and its phones have played a major role in the mobile industry.

Currently among the top phones of 2018, HUAWEI P20 PRO has taken the number one spot beating SAMSUNG GALAXY S9/S9 PLUS. The phone is obviously there for a reason and with this in mind, Australia might change its decision or maybe it won’t. Let us wait and watch.
