The Galaxy A6s: the first Samsung phone not produced by Samsung
The Silicon Review
25 October, 2018

Samsung inaugurated the Galaxy A6s and the Galaxy A9s, two new Galaxy Aseries phones in China. The Galaxy A9 is renamed as the Galaxy A9s for the Chinese market; it is basically the same phone with four back cameras. The interesting fact is that the Galaxy A6s is the first phone not produced by the company. Reportedly, Samsung had been in talks with Wingtech, Chinese original design manufacturing companyto outsource production of its mid- to low-end Galaxy phones. Wingtech is the manufacturer of Xiaomi phones.

The Galaxy A6s has stunning features. It has two 12MP cameras on the back and one 12MP front camera. It has a 6-inch 1080p screen with Super AMOLED display. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 660 chip and has 6GB of RAM, available with 64 and 128GB storage options. Its starting price is CNY 1,800, which is equivalent to about $260 USD. Currently, the phone is only available in China.

It can be inferred that the launch of these two phones is Samsung’s strategy to increase sales in China and India as the company is struggling to compete against phones makers like Huawei and Xiaomi. If sources are to be believed, Samsung has less than 1% of the share in the Chinese market, which is the probable reason for Samsung to consider shutting down one of its production units in China. The company is hoping that the Galaxy A6s does well in China so that more ODM phones can be produced by the company in the future.
