Reports: China Blocks Microsoft’s search Engine Bing
The Silicon Review
25 January, 2019

According to reports, Bing, Microsoft’s search engine has been blocked in China. The news came after some users within the country reported that they were not able to access the website called cn.bing.com. China’s telecom company Unicom confirmed the development which was issued by the government. The cause of the ban is still unknown.

“We’ve confirmed that Bing is currently inaccessible in China and are engaged to determine next steps,” quoted Microsoft.

Usually it’s common to see a ban like this in a country where there are several other international websites which gets banned. Last year Twitter was banned while Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have been banned for years. The latest ban may have two reasons; the first one is that Bing was the only search engine which is created by Microsoft which was available to the people in China despite of having many local competitors.

Bing had managed to survive because of Microsoft’s willingness to hold talks with China’s government to discuss about the censorship policies, nowthat has also proved ineffective to protect Bing.

Under its current president, the country has become more powerful to gain control over the internet policies.

The second reason of the ban maybe because of Google faced a huge backlash for its search product called Dragonfly. The company faced problems from both within and outside China.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft will deal with the situation since it’s the world largest software company.
