Uber plans to launch autonomous bikes and scooters

Ride-sharing has definitely come a long way. It was begun as an application to help users hail cabs from any location. Corporations evolved the service into carpooling to allow drivers to earn some money on their daily commute and then started testing self-driven vehicles to enhance user experience. Then came scooters and bikes that could be rented or even shared. Taking a cue from the growing popularity of two-wheeler sharing, Uber is now planning to launch autonomous bikes as well as scooters to bolster its customer base.

Uber has been one of the leading players in the self-driven car industry, with large research and development effort directed towards perfecting the technology of the autonomous vehicle. There is little doubt that such cars are the future of the auto industry. However, Uber could be the first corporation to integrate this technology into two-wheelers. The division responsible for the development of these scooters is called Micromobility Robotics and will be the within Uber’s JUMP division which is also responsible for shared electric bikes and scooters. The company envisions its scooters riding themselves to a user’s location or even traveling to charging locations after they have completed pick-ups or drops.

The Micromobility Robotics division will also ensure adequate safety and efficiency for future users. Ride-sharing has numerous advantages, some of which include convenient transportation, reliable employment for drivers, reduction of traffic congestion, a decrease in vehicle emissions, etc.
