Donald Trump is pushing for space based missile defense
The Silicon Review
18 January, 2019

Donald Trump has announced intentions to pursue a space-based missile defense system that is something right from a sci-fi thriller. This system would be able to intercept and destroy any missile fired at the United States from any location and at any time. While people would be right to assume that this is another one of the president’s idiosyncrasies, the plan for such a missile defense system up in the orbit comes in response to a report by the United States Department of Defense (DoD).

The report stated that the current missile defenses may be somewhat inadequate in the face of newer cruise missiles being developed by China and Russia. These countries have been developing hypersonic missiles that travel at mind-boggling speeds and would pose a serious challenge to the current arsenal fielded by the United States. The proposed missile defense system in space would easily be able to adapt to any threats, both current and future against any advancements of any other nation. The United States DoD is ready to evaluate the feasibility of such a project. President Ronald Reagan had proposed such a system, but aborted it since the technology for such a missile shield wasn’t available at the time.

However, the tech and the know-how does exists today, and so this plan may not be as outlandish as previous ones.
