Reports: Apple to add sleep tracking feature to Apple Watch in 2020
The Silicon Review
28 Febuary, 2019

Apple is planning to launch a new feature called sleep-tracking feature on its smartwatches by 2020, sources familiar to the matter reported.

The Cupertino-based giant has been working on the new feature from many months in its headquarters in California, the US, the sources have been reported by Bloomberg. There is a possibility for the new feature to be rolled out next year if it clears the testing phase in California.

Once the new feature is out, Apple watch-users can track their sleeping patterns and quality of sleep. For now, the company is depended on the clock app that is loaded on its iPhones and it offers sleep tracking data via its health apps with the help of third sleep monitors.

Apple’s smartwatch doesn’t have dedicated sensors that can monitor the sleeping cycle of users.

Apple’s rival in the smartwatch section, Fitbit has a better sleep tracking feature on its smartwatchand fitness trackers. The data it can show are: sleep quality and sleeping time along with it can also distinguish between different sleep cycles like light, deep and REM sleep cycles.

Therefore, Apple needs to add critical functionality if they want to match up with Fitbit, which is currently are dominating the smartwatch section.

The company also needs to enhance the battery life of its smartwatches in order to track sleep cycle at night, on the other hand, Fitbit’s Smartwatches can sustain for a week with a full charge, the sources are referred from India Today.
