Facebook is taking Its AI Chip Development Seriously

Ina move to deliver the next breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the social media giant, Facebook has put serious efforts towards the creation of its own AI chips.It also marks a competition with other big players like Google and Amazon.

YannLeCun, the Chief AI scientist of Facebook stated that the company is looking to build a smart digital assistant which can communicate with humans regarding any subject. The development will be a major step-up from voice-controlled devices which are available today. 

The company wants to make AI more of a practical tool in its social network. It will help to monitor real-time videos allowing the moderators to post appropriate contents.

According to the Financial Times, the company wanted to work with a couple of chip makers on new designs- it recently unveiled a project with Intel Corp. – but also stated that it was manufacturing their own chips for AI programs.

The decision by the social media giant to create its individual AI chips has put Nvidia in a challenging position where it is facing a short-term squeeze from a pullback by large data center customers. Currently, the majority of the data centers around the world use Nvidia’s graphics processor for AI.

Other than the chip development, Facebook is aiming to successfully complete its research work on the latest designs for neural networks. Neural networks are the core to deep learning systems behind recent innovations in things like image and language recognition.
