MIT Researchers Creates a New System to Help Robots

MIT Researchers Creates a New System to Help Robots
The Silicon Review
20 Febuary, 2019

A team of researchers from MIT have created a system to help robots in tracking down moving objects more accurately in an efficient manner. To do that, the researchers used RFID tags in the system. RFID tags are a barcode-based tracking system which identifies items.

The new creation can be very useful for the future of drones, robot manufacturing, and several other applications.

Dubbed as Turbo Track, the new system has the capability to take over computer vision. Computer vision is limited to its range of sight and can lose track in fast-moving situations. On the other hand, radio frequencies can be recognizedthrough walls.

The robot gets a more detailed idea about its target through the RFID tag which is applied to the objects. The researchers claim that the new system can help robots to trace objects within a time frame of 7.5 milliseconds.

Turbo Track features a lot of capacity for use cases in the field of manufacturing. The system can provide more accuracy to a robotic arm used in an assembly line. It could prevent robotics accidents as the one occurred in the Amazon warehouse last year.

Apart from that, the new system can be used to help control the flight patterns of drones. The system will cost friendly because RFID is inexpensive.

The new system’s paperwork will be showcased at the USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation. The concept is very simple and novel.
