Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 675 with high-end features for mid-range smartphones

Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 675 with high-end features for mid-range smartphones
The Silicon Review
23 October, 2018

Snapdragon 675, a mid-range SoC (System on Chip) for smartphones has been launched by Qualcomm. The SoC has faster cores and triple-camera support. The interesting thing to note is that its new Kryo 460 architecture is built around ARM’s Cortex-A76 cores which is basically designed for flagship devices and haven’t yet utilized into a Qualcomm chip.In fact, theHuawei’s Kirin 980 is the first major SoC with A76.

The Snapdragon 675 has two cores at 2.0GHz which are focused on performance, alongside six 1.78GHz cores designed for power efficiency. Although the already available Snapdragon 845 for flagship phones has much faster cores compared to Snapdragon 675as the 845 uses four 2.8GHz performance cores based on the Cortex-A75, it is notable that Qualcomm has announced a new CPU design on a mid-range product. It is an unusual thing as the results might outshine the
apparently higher-tier Snapdragon 710.

If the cores are kept aside, the Snapdragon 675 is probably designed so that not only flagship phones but even mid-range phones can access the high-end features. The new chip design has been built with triple-camera setups and it also includes Quick Charge 4+ support and a faster AI engine.

The company expects that the new SoC will make its way into users’ phones by the mid of 2019. By that time, the newly launched phones will have three back cameras.
