Facebook to deploy AI and ML to Combat Revenge Porn
The Silicon Review
18 March, 2019

Facebook will deploy AI to monitor ‘revenge porn’ on its social network. The announcement was made public on Friday. The move by the website comes at a time when the obscene practice of post came under the radar of authorities; hence, plaguing the website.

Obscene practice involves sharing intimate photos of someone without their consent on social media.

The AI is in addition to the company’s pilot program. Under the program, the representatives review offending images and remove them accordingly. AI and ML will be specifically used in the social media platform to recognize near-nude pics and clips that have been posted without any permission from the owners and remove them.

According to Facebook, the new tool will have the capability to search content even before anyone reports it. After searching the posts, the offending content will be reviewed by a member of Facebook’s community operations team. If the content is found to be offensive, it will be removed by the member and the user’s account, responsible for posting and spreadingthe post will be disabled.

The company’s blog post stated that it will add a hub called “Not without My Consent” on its Safety Center page.  The feature will assist users whose intimate photos have been publicly posted on social media without their permission.

Coming to revenge porn, it is a practice that unreasonably affects men or women who are trapped by former partners by spreading intimate or sexually explicit photos of them on social media sites in order to extort or harm them.
