Google plans to expand its office space in Taiwan
The Silicon Review
27 March, 2019

Google made an announcement today that it will expand its office in Taiwan which will create hundreds of new jobs. The company is coming up with a new workspace in Banqiao District, New Taipei City. The new office space will be built in Taipei Far Eastern Telecom Park.

Presently, Google has around 2,000 employees in the country. As per Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Hardware, the firm plans to expand the workforce and hire more women. The new workspace is going to play an integral role in Google’s Intelligent Taiwan project, which was announced last year. Also, the company had a training programme in which it trained around 5,000 students in AI technology and 50,000 digital marketers.

Project Dragonfly is the company’s one of the most controversial projects. Under this project, it plans to build a censored version of its search engine for the Chinese market. Hence, the company will be observed closely to know what it does in Taiwan and its other offices in Asia. However, Google informed that the decision to expand in Taiwan has nothing to do with those issues.

Google acquired a large part of HTC’s smartphone unit in 2018. After the acquisition, Taiwan became the largest engineering hub in Asia.

In 2010, Google shut down its offices in China. Its potential re-launch in the country was also one of the main topics of questioning during the committee hearing in December.
