Norway to implement wireless electric car charging facilities for taxis

Norway to implement wireless electric car charging facilities for taxis
The Silicon Review
22 March, 2019

Norway’s commitment to clean energy is known all around the world. The small Nordic country with a population of about 5.3 million has not wasted any time in switching over to renewable sources of energy in every possible sector. It is now set to become the first country to implement wireless electric car charging stations. The country’s capital city of Oslo will receive induction based charging stations for its taxis. The induction plates for this system will be attached on the roads and their corresponding receivers would be installed on the taxis. Moreover, these chargers would be placed in taxi stands where cabs can recharge whilst waiting for passengers.

The one of a kind charging system is being developed by a Finnish firm called FortumOyj in conjunction with US-based Momentum Dynamics. This amazing new charging system would enable charging up to 75 kilowatts and is capable of supporting Oslo’s fleet of taxis. Norway is also going so far as to ban all internal combustion engine cars by 2025 and mandating that every new car sold thereafter be all-electric.

Most subject matter experts agree that it is easier for a smaller country like Norway to implement renewable energy given its small population, which is less than that of some of the largest cities like New York, London, Tokyo, etc. Moreover, since the country does not have any automotive industry of its own, there is little to no lobbying or pushback from parties with vested interests.
