The virtual fitting room is all set to revolutionize the online shopping experience

The Size-Stream Scanner, a virtual fitting room by Metail, a company based in Cambridge is the next big thing in e-retail tech. Though it is right now in its prototype stage, it is potentially going to revolutionize online shopping experience.

Presently, the virtual fitting room is simply a space with curtains around it. The arrangement has ten sensors, trained on different body parts. Once the music starts, all one needs to do is place his/her feet on the marked spot and grab a pair of handles. The machine, then, has precise measurements within seconds after taking three scans of the body. Then, the screen outside will display the 3D model.

"We get to construct a body model of you, with all the lumps and bumps, so it's very personalized," explains Jim Downing, the Chief Technical Officer of Metail. The idea is that users can dress virtual models of themselves in various outfits. They can also see from different angles.

"Everybody has the ability to look great," says Metail founder Tom Adeyoola. "There's no reason why we won't move to a future where the idea of size disappears. It's about dressing the best for your shape to make you feel good."

However, there is an unnecessary skepticismabout the idea of digital fitting rooms amongst the retail owners as they think it will put their customers off. This is a great way to capture body size accurately.

There are a few other companies like Zozo (online fashion retailer in Japan) that are working on a similar idea which gives a hint that it is going to be the game changer in the retail industry.
