Volvo to Deploy Cameras and Sensors in its Cars from 2020

21 March, 2019

Volvo, the Sweden-based automotive giant, has planned to deploy in-car sensors in its vehicles from next year to prevent drunk driving, reported the Reuters. Once the cameras and sensors are installed, the company will be able to keep an eye on the driver’s activities through it; preventing drunken driving and accidents.

The detailing of the new safety feature was outlined in Gothenburg this week.

In the past couple of years, the development of such sophisticated technology has been accelerated because of safety concerns and the industry’s increasing focus on autonomous cars.

However, Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo stated that it will take almost 5-10 years for the mass production of such vehicles, and in the meantime, the company aims to create a feasible plan to sell cars with additional safety features like camera monitoring.

The Swedish carmaker is also working on a very critical concept called driverless highway autopilot car. Veoneer, an auto parts maker in Sweden is helping Volvo to achieve its mission. Volvo is targeting 2025 to achieve a third of its sales from autonomous vehicles.

The cameras will be deployed on all Volvo cars built on the SPA2 platform for bigger cars, and CMA platform for smaller cars. The installation process will begin on the XC90 SUV in the early part of 2021.

The company said that if any driver is found drunk or tired then the car’s speed will be slowed down and Volvo’ assistance services will be alerted about the situation.
