Slovenia to Start International AI Research in Collaboration with UNESCO
The Silicon Review
08 April, 2019

Slovenia intends to launch a research center for AI. It will be the first of its kind in Europe. The announcement was made public by the Slovenian government.UNESCO will help them to carry out the new launch.

For the new establishment, Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Ljubljana will convert its Department of Intelligent Systems into an AI research center.

During the year 1972, JSI and the University of Ljubljana started working on AI.And during the 90s, the development of AI research continued, starting with ‘heuristic search' into segments such as qualitative learning and ML. Therefore, Slovenia witnessed a rise among the researchers and publications in academia.

Few notable works like ‘The Event Registry’ and ‘COPCAMS’ (cognitive and perceptive cameras) comes under the list of Slovenian AI industry and research.

Coming to ‘The Event Registry’, it is a system which is designed to examine text news sources in different languages. It also tracks how news spreads across the world. Other functions of the system include the prediction of news development and spreading (can turn up to be a vital source for journalists).

On the other hand, seven countries in Europe joined hands to create ‘COPCAMS’. The collaborative work included the creation of a network of cameras. There are two cameras based on perceptive and cognitive video systems. These cameras have the capability to recognize and decide vital video streams for transmission through visual or auditory information.

The network is used in reality for monitoring traffic, surveillance industry, and advanced manufacturing.
