Google Maps Brings Up an Interesting Feature That Uses Machine Learning To Suggest the Best Dishes
The Silicon Review
31 May, 2019

Google Maps is now up to making use of machine learning to help people choose what to order. With the recent update, the app will be able to highlight the restaurant’s most popular dishes. For now, the update is only available on Android but will soon be updated on iOS as well. The feature will utilize ML to offer dish suggestions to restaurant goers based on the restaurants’ photos and reviews. Anytime diners post good comments or reviews about a dish, Google Maps will take note of that and use it to suggest dishes, while matching the dish to photos uploaded by customers. But new restaurants or ones that have few reviews may have some difficulty to benefit from the feature.

Moreover, as it works as an automated system, it might fail to curate the right things at times. Usually machine learning takes a set of recommendations over time and uses them to improve its output. With the added feature, Google Maps will let restaurant goers take pictures of their meals and upload them to the app which will then ask them to mention the name of the dish and help better inform the feature.

Google Maps will also have an ‘overview’ tab where users can find dish suggestions. They can then just tap on that to see all related reviews posted by other diners. On the menu tab, they can sort dishes by popularity or break them down according to breakfast, lunch and dinner. Though it’s a small feature to be updated to Google Maps, it still is a very useful addition and can become a more robust platform for businesses in the near future.
