Scientists install weathering ...A team of researchers, as well as scientists, has successfully installed a wide array of sensory equipment and instruments on Mount Everest, making them the highest in place on earth. The scientific expedition consisted of experts involved with the National Geographic Society and scientists from the Tribhuvan University in Nepal. It is perhaps one of the more favorable expeditions carried out to Everest in recent times, especially in light of the recent overcrowding near the summit, which caused fatalities among the climbers and drew widespread international condemnation.
The expedition managed to install weather monitoring stations that are fully automated at altitudes of over 27,600 feet and 26,000 feet, making them the highest in the world. Moreover, scientists also collected geological samples from the terrain which was at a height of over 26,300 feet, once again setting a record of doing so at the highest altitude to date. The team installed five weather monitoring stations across Everest in order to get comprehensive coverage of the inhospitable environment. Furthermore, a helicopter based Lidar scan was successfully completed, making it the highest such scan ever conducted.
These instruments will go a long way in helping scientists carry out detailed observations of Everest and its surrounding area, which in turn would improve our understanding of the glacial and environmental changes happening at the world’s highest point. Research expeditions like these increase our understanding of climate change and help us find better solutions for the same.
