Whistleblower reveals Siri rec...Tech giant Apple has joined other tech mammoths such as Google and Amazon in secretly sharing voice assistants recording of its users. Apple Inc. agreed to the allegations to The Guardian after a whistleblower brought it to out. This informant revealed that Siri queries are routinely sent to contractors for analysis. This is not mentioned in the company’s privacy policy.
The recordings can be sensitive in nature —like contact details, location, and can be several seconds long.
However, Apple has a simple explanation just like other companies—the data is collected to analyze by humans to make the services more effective. Further, the company says the analysis is carried out in secure facilities by employees who have strict confidentiality agreements. But the catch here is that Apple never revealed the information until it was forced to do so.
Last month, it was news that Google sends audio clips from its Google Assistant to be analysed and Amazon is known to store the Alexa queries.
Apple told The Guardian that “less than 1% of daily queries are sent.” But millions of Apple devices use Siri, thereby making 1% a huge number of recordings.
