Cisco’s CIO Emphasizes on Cl...Jacqueline Guichelaar, CIO of Cisco Systems, has unveiled the possibility of closing several energy-consuming data centres and shifting greater amount of data towards public cloud services. The Wall Street Journal confirmed.
“As technologists, we have a huge responsibility to make sure we’re always thinking about how to optimize power consumption,” Ms. Guichelaar was quoted as saying by The Wall Street Journal.
The move will not only reduce power expenses but also curb energy consumption and promote the sustainability practises, she added.
Big players in the IT space have taken stringent steps to cut the energy consumption among hardware and software. For example, the CTO of Rolls Royce has become the public face of the company’s efforts towards sustainability in recent times.
According to a report by Anders Andrew, a researcher who works for Huawei stated that 15 percent of the world’s electricity consumption will be from the internet, including computing infrastructure. It will emit upto 7 percent of the global energy-related carbon emission by 2030, the reports added.
In regard, to a research conducted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Ms Guichelaar said that a single data centre’s energy can power 25,000 homes. Data centres are perfect sanctuaries for storing information, loaded with several servers and elements of tech infrastructure that is used by firms to collect and process data.
