Snap to roll out new Spectacles Sunglass
The Silicon Review
14 August, 2019

Snap will roll out the third version of its Spectacle sunglasses, Reuters reported on Tuesday.  The new Spectacle sunglasses, Spectacle 3, will be able to take photos and videos and upload them directly to Snapchat, the company added.

The new launch will be a big push for Snap in the augmented reality (AR) space since it has struggled to slice out money from its Spectacle business. In 2017, Spectacle glasses worth $40 million remained unsold.

Snap has decided to keep the production smaller for the new version of Spectacle sunglasses in order to experiment with AR, an important area for the company.

The shipping for Spectacle 3 will begin from fall and will cost $380, little costlier than its predecessor.  According to Snap, there will be dual cameras equipped in the sunglasses providing more depth and dimension to videos and pictures. Once users upload pictures to their Snap account, they can edit them by adding new lighting, landscapes, and three-dimensional effects.

Snap became more famous among its users when it introduced AR features such as Lens that can overlay effects such as dog ears on photos, etc.

The Santa Monica-based tech social media company claims that it has gained 13 million new users in the second quarter. Last week, it unveiled its new fundraising plans to help carry out developments such as acquisitions and investments in AR and content.

It is learned from a people familiar with the matter that Snap should focus on generating revenue from its content and possibly step into the music space.
