Cerebras Systems Unveils World...Cerebras Systems, an American startup, has unleashed the world’s largest computer chip. The chip, dubbed as Wafer Scale Engine is bigger than an iPad.
According to the company, the chip is capable of operating complex AI-based systems in everything ranging from autonomous vehicles to surveillance software. But, experts suggest that the installation of the chip would be practically impossible in many data centres.
What makes the new chip unique?
The most powerful GPU’s have 5,000 cores but the new chip has four lakh cores, all connected to each other by high-bandwidth connections. On the advantageous side, Wafer Scale has the potential to carry out difficult ML-based tasks seamlessly without consuming much power. On the other hand, the chip will cut down the time from months to minutes; in order to process the data, the company said.
Andrew Feldman, founder and CEO of Cerebras Systems said- “overcome decades-old technical challenges” that had limited chip size.
Less training time eliminates a big bottleneck to industry-wide progress, Mr Feldman added.
The company hasn’t revealed anything about the chip’s cost yet but shipping has begun to a small number of customers.
In previous developments, Google developed TPU (tensor processor unit) chips to power software, and Huawei also unveiled that its smartphone Kirin chips were powered by NPU (neural processing unit). But, not all such efforts have been successful.
The new development is a big achievement for a startup.
