Amazon.com Inc will aim to fully stop using carbon producing vehicles by 2040, Reuters reported. As a part of the initiative, the company has ordered one hundred thousand electric vehicles from a startup. The announcement was made public on Thursday by Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.

The main challenge for the E-commerce giant is to put a curb on emissions, which sends 10 billion items per year and has an enourmous transportation footprint. Mr Bezos said that the company knows what it can do and it has to do it.

Ahead of the Climate Week in NYC next week, Amazon unveiled a number of actions at a press conference in the capital city, Washington. In the event in NYC, global leaders and company leaders will discuss ways to fight climate change.

The company will fulfil its commitments towards the Paris climate accord ten years ahead of schedule, said Mr Bezos. The American government said it was withdrawing from the Paris climate accord.

Mr Bezos added that the company ordered the vehicles from Rivian Automotive LLC, an electric- vehicle design and manufacturing startup and will utilize renewable energy for all its operations by 2030, up from 40 percent today.

Amazon and Ford Motors Co are among the investors in Rivian. The company’s first electric delivery vans will hit the roads within two years and all one hundred thousand will be used by 2024.
