New study explains the molecular mechanism for the therapeutic effects of cilantro
The Silicon Review

The researchers have recently discovered that herbs such as cilantro can be used as anticonvulsants. The actual mechanism of how Cilantro worked on the human body was unknown, but scientists now have uncovered the molecular mechanism of cilantro, which helps to cure certain seizures, epilepsy, and other diseases.

The new discovery states that cilantro, which was used as a traditional medicine, activates a class of sodium-potassium channels in the brain which will reduce the seizure activity by controlling the release of potassium ions to the brain. The component known as Dodecenal present in cilantro will bind to the specific parts of potassium pumps, and open them, which in turn reduces the activity of cellular excitability.

Scientists have screened the leaf metabolites of cilantro, revealing that it consists of a long-chain fatty acid that will activate the ion channels that are present in the brain, including neuronal isoforms that are predominant and are responsible for electrical activity in the brain and heart. The results have also shown that the ubiquitous culinary herb can also be used to treat certain heart disorders.

This discovery plays a crucial role in the field of neurosciences and may lead to improvements in therapeutics and drug discovery. It also will help scientists to discover cilantro based drugs, by modifying certain components such as Dodecenal to develop safer and most effective anticonvulsant medication.
