Fenix marine services grab an $18.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation

A total of $18.2 million in the form of a grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) as part of the Department’s “Port Infrastructure Development Program” has been awarded to Fenix Marine Services, in partnership with the Port of Los Angeles. The funds are proposed to be used for the construction of the “Intermodal Railyard Expansion and Modernization Project” at the Fenix’s Marine terminal Facility at the Los Angeles port.

Cargo dwell and transit times will now be cut short to as much as two days, which means 2,000 fewer truck trips per day, thanks to the increase of terminal’s on-dock rail capacity up to 520,000 TEUs. With the newly added capital, the project aims at building five new working tracks just north and parallel to the terminal’s existing railyard. Instead of loading trains via the off-dock railyards which are located about 27 miles away, trains can now be loaded with more cargo via the on-dock railyard with the help of the 11,500 feet-long new track.

The firm has started working on the design of the $40.5 million project. About 320 jobs will be created once the project gets a green signal from the Los Angeles Harbor Commission. An important link in the USDOT designated National Multimodal Freight Network, Fenix Marine Services, move about 40 percent of its cargo directly by rail to and from the Southeast U.S. and the Midwest.
