French drug maker Sanofi to of...Sanofi, a French drug maker launched a global health brand; it will make 30 of its meds, including insulin, available in 40 lower-income countries on a not-for-profit basis.
The treatment offered is likely to be the first step in the plan for Sanofi to increase access to its medicine worldwide. The treatments will be provided under the part of Sanofi's global health unit, Impact brand, launched last year, which is outside the commercial business. Sanofi said that the plan also includes an amount of $25 million Impact fund, which will provide training on using the medicines and support local start-up healthcare businesses.
The treatments provided by Sanofi are available on the essential medicines list of the World Health Organization. The U.N. agency has singled out insulin in particular as a life-saving medicine for diabetics. The burden on people with diabetes is growing, and insulin is difficult to access in many low-income countries. The essential medicines list also includes off-patent treatments for hypertension, tuberculosis, cancer, and malaria, among other conditions.
The countries included in this initiative are chiefly in Africa, Niger to Zimbabwe. Some conflict-hit countries and some Asian countries, including Myanmar and Cambodia, are also added to the list.
