WMO report warns 'time is runn...According to the report, time is running out for people to make the transformational changes needed to control the rising temperatures
The U.N. weather agency, World Meteorological Organization, reported that the greenhouse gas concentrations have gone above the average rates. According to the report, time is running out for people to make the transformational changes needed to control the rising temperatures. The annual report of the WMO is the first of the several that were released ahead of a U.N. climate summit, which is to be held in Egypt next month. Hikes in the atmospheric concentration of all three greenhouse gases –methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide – outdid the average increase over the past decade; it showed, meaning they are now all at new record levels.
Concentrations of carbon dioxide rose by 2.5 parts per million to 415.7 - a level not witnessed since at least 3 million years ago when the Earth was much warmer. Methane is the second gas contributing to warming after carbon dioxide. WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said "The continuing rise in concentrations of the main heat-trapping gases, including the record acceleration in methane levels, shows that we are heading in the wrong direction.” He called for a transformation in transport, industry and energy systems.
