Working with Orion Health

Orion Health is an award winning, global provider of healthcare information technology that advances population health management and precision medicine solutions. With headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand, Orion Health has 25 offices in 30 countries and serves more than 450 customers such as healthcare providers and payers, networks, and government organizations.

Orion Health business focuses on exchanging healthcare records between organizations securely. In 2016, Orion Health embarked on a journey to build a security operations center (SOC) on AWS.

Orion had files on AWS and was using native AWS services such as RDS, IAM, Cloudtrail, VPC, and EC2. They needed security operations and compliance to work at speed and scale of their DevOps teams. Traditional Managed Security providers fell short of offering solutions that commingled data with other companies. This was a compliance boundary issue for Orion due to privacy rules. Computing needed to be done within the confines of each of Orion’s customers’ own environment.

Finally, they wanted a security solution that could support both Windows and Linux operating systems, and of course, a security partner with deep experience on AWS and healthcare compliance.

After reviewing several security solutions for AWS environments, Orion Health turned to Anitian. We suggested our Compliance Automation Platform to provide the automation they were looking for. Anitian was the only solution that could integrate with their DevOps Teams, assist them with compliance requirements, offer 24x7 incident response, and offered a solution that did not commingle their data.

Anitian’s Compliance Automation Platform provided Orion with the capabilities to secure data and meet PCI, HIPAA, and other compliance requirements. Several AWS cloud-native services were implemented to secure their environment such as AWS WAF, AWS Application Gateway, EC2, and VPC. Anitian augmented their solution by adding AWS Config and Cloud formation templates. Additionally, AnitianSecOps formed the foundation for Orion Health’s SOC with automated, centralized, policy-driven management and administration.

The results were great for Orion health. The company met their stringent security requirements and gained HIPAA compliance. In addition, their lead product, Amadeus on AWS was able to gain HITRUST certification and GDPR requirements within a few months of deployment.

With the 24x7 security operations center (SOC), Orion Health’s team had the global visibility they needed to efficiently manage customers in any country around the world through the SOC allowing them to grow as a company and meet their compliance objectives without having to build their own SOC teams, tools, and configurations. This allowed them to be much nimbler as a company and focus on growing their business.

He is recognized for his success in helping high-growth technology and Software-as-a-Service companies scale globally and innovate, most recently as President and Chief Operating Officer at SpaceFlight Industries, a global disrupter in the Space Industry delivering value in software and rocket launches to the Small Satellite industry. Previously, he served as Group Vice President of the $1.8B Enterprise business at Citrix and prior to that he served as the General Manager for Azure Data, Security and Storage infrastructure businesses at Microsoft Corporation.
