“COSMOSIM is the only simulator that works from the circuit level of semiconductors to the system level of autonomous driving.”

OTSL, Inc is a technology company that provides high technological capabilities by planning and developing embedded systems, real-time systems, and short-distance wireless communication systems. It provides various services, including system development, software development, consultation on quality assurance, and provision of educational services. The company serves clients in Asia and Europe.

Shoji Hatano founded OTSL, Inc in 2003. Currently, he serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the company and oversees its overall tech infrastructure.

OSTL, Inc introduced OTSL Germany GmbH to showcase COSMOSIM, a sensor simulator framework. The Silicon Review reached out to Mr. Hatano for his comments about this new venture. Here’s what he had to say.

Interview Highlights

Q. Why was OTSL Germany born? What pain points did you set out to solve?

We established OTSL Germany GmbH in Munich as a base to introduce our sensor simulator framework “COSMOSIM”, which is used in the development of Autonomous driving (AD) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), to customers all over the world.

Most important thing is that current automotive sensors (e.g., RADAR, LIDAR, Camera…) depend on semiconductor technologies and specifications, however, most ADAS simulators adopt high-level behavior models for AD/ADAS simulations, so it has serious problems which are quite different from real sensor outputs, and it adversely affects AD/ADAS functions. Our “COSMOSIM” can simulate from semiconductor to AD/ADAS system and can solve such as various problems.

Q. How does OTSL’s next-generation automotive sensor simulator framework help the automotive sector?

Our COSMOSIM reduces AD/ADAS development time and cost for customers. In particular, it has helped improve the verification coverage through actual traffic accident simulation, which was difficult with conventional simulators.

Q. What more can you tell us about the COSMOSIM framework?

COSMOSIM is the only simulator that works from the circuit level of semiconductors to the system level of autonomous driving.

Q. What is the AMMWR simulator all about?

The AMMWR is an Advanced Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor Simulator, and one of the COSMOSIM sensor simulator frameworks. AMMWR was released in 2017 as the world's first 3D real-time millimeter-wave sensor simulator. Since then, it has implemented a number of cutting-edge features and is now implementing even more cutting-edge features (e.g., OFDM radar) and is still the most advanced millimeter-wave radar simulator available.

Q. Tell us about the OTSL team. What value do they bring to the company?

Our engineers are developing valuable products. They contribute to the development of human beings and provide highly reliable systems to help customers create products that make people's lives richer. Not just the company, but they bring value to the world as well.

Q. Will OTSL be expanding, bringing on any new services that we should be aware of?

We are willing to extend COSMOSIM from vehicles to smart city.

Q. What's the one thing you want OTSL to be known for?

OTSL provides products and consulting services that enhance quality such as safety, security, and ethics. So I want the company to be known for quality and precision.
