We have with us, the CEO and Founder: Marc Alringer

Why was the company set up? How did you select the vertical and decide to be a part of the global platform?

The company was initially setup to be an umbrella company for contractors. Shortly after, there was a demand for mobile applications and we decided that this was going to be the future of digital.

Tell us about your first product that was launched.

Our first client, a company called Perminova, asked us to develop a web based application that could help electro physiologists track procedures and more reliably capture all of the charges that occur during procedures. The product was first launched at UCSD Medical Centers, and Cedars Sanai.

How have the responses from your consumers over the years motivated you to shape your offerings/ grow the company?

Our consumers are our clients. We have learned that creating great user experiences is something we can offer them as most top designers are not satisfied working on a single product over a long period of time. Hence our offering of User Centric design and using cutting edge development technologies form the basis of our offerings.

What were the grounds on which you have expanded your company and its offerings over the years?

We started out by focusing more on the engineering side of software and realized that great software also requires great user interface design. Hence, we built up a design department to fuel our growth.

What challenges did you face in your initial years? What can your peers learn from it?

The challenge in the initial years was financing. The company has never taken outside funding and was entirely bootstrapped from day one. I would recommend others to look at getting a small business loan to seed working capital.

If you have to list five factors that have been/ are the biggest asset to your organization, what would they be and why?

  1. Our Team
  2. Our Culture
  3. Our Location
  4. Combining design
  5. Development under one roof

What do you feel are the reasons behind:

  • Your product popularity – We are a service organization, but in general, our design portfolio is one of the biggest factors to attract new clients
  • Your consistent growth as an organization – By hiring the most talented individuals, we are able to deliver high quality work. This in turn leads to referrals to new client projects.

How big is your organization today? Briefly explain the organizational structure.

We have 55+ employees and our staff is a mix of full time employees and contractors. Our staff is grouped into 4 buckets; Overhead (Management, Sales, and Marketing), Design, Development and Delivery teams.

‘It is difficult to start a venture. But far more difficult is to maintain it’ – How would you and your team interpret this saying?

A lot of people think that they want to create an app, but in reality they need to think about creating a business. Even though the idea might be great, it takes an entire business ecosystem to make it fly.

Are there any trigger factors/events/individuals that have played key roles in shaping your organization’s road map?

Once we built up a dedicated design team, we were able to perform complete product development, from concept, to design, to development to quality assurance.

How did your learnings help you to set this company up? What inspires you to excel in your field of business?

My experience from working at 3 other startups. I used to be a software developer and realized that anything is possible. That said, many of the companies I worked for did not invest in user experience design and the end result was clunky systems that required help manuals or training to use. I want to help transform companies by creating better digital experiences.

What is a typical day in your office like?

Our office is a typical development environment. Most people roll in around 8:30, dogs trailing behind. Our office has no cubicles to promote collaboration, yet everyone has dedicated spaces surrounded by pony walls. By 9 a.m., SCRUM meetings start across our many projects, then it’s mostly heads down work, unless we have client visits or have client review meetings. Most of the team members will go to lunch together and on Fridays we will bring in food for everyone. Unless it’s crunch time on a project, most leave after the typical 8 hours day.

Where do you see you and your company a couple of years from now?

I see us being the go-to company in Southern California for custom software development. We hope to double in size over the next 3 years.
