Tony Zorc: Interview Highlights
What was the reason behind the genesis of Accounting Seed?
I started Accounting Seed in 2008 as a consulting firm for solutions accounting. During this time, I really started exploring and appreciating Salesforce. I was blown away by how limitless the Salesforce CRM was in how it gives users total control over the way they manage their organization. I wanted to bring this kind of flexibility to the back office. Leveraging my experience in accounting and IT, I set about creating an innovative, open architecture accounting application powered by the Salesforce platform.
A well-defined mission and vision statement is the most important phenomenon for any business. Can you explain your M&V statements in brief?
Our mission is to empower companies to achieve the best financial health possible through accurate, timely, and actionable accounting data. Our goal is to make accounting easier and faster in every way possible. This includes the way users can gather, visualize, and use vital financial data to make the best decisions possible that will bring true return-on-investment.
Our vision is to cultivate a wide range of customers using our accounting solution in many different ways. Each company is unique. Our accounting platform is equipped to adjust to any company’s needs, instead of forcing them to conform to our technology. We want to see our technology adapted and used in many different ways as a testament to our product’s scope and design.
What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?
The biggest hurdle for me was learning when I needed help, recognizing when to delegate key tasks and objectives to other staff. When Accounting Seed was starting out, I was doing everything myself. However, in order to grow the organization, I needed to find and work with people with different skill sets and proficiencies than myself. This meant letting go of some things, shifting my focus to higher-priority tasks, and allowing my staff to do what they do best. As the founder of Accounting Seed, some of these things were hard to let go of, but my team is doing excellent work, and it’s paying off with increased productivity and sales.
What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
Boredom! When I get bored or feel inactive, I feel totally trapped in my own head! If I am not doing something progressive, I feel like life is just drifting by. I combat this by always striving to improve every facet of my life, including business. This is what I call ‘Leveling-Up’. There’s always room to grow and develop. I think of ways to achieve new goals and seek to materialize them as soon as I can.
What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business’ success?
Determination. Strategy and adaptability are ultimately fueled by your vision and the effort you put into making the vision a reality. Business requires intelligent risks, but the initiative to take those risks and see them through is what will lead to business success. You also need to realize that changes are inevitable and flexible enough to adjust to growing needs in order to steer your business successfully.
What other leaders do you look up to, and why?
I like a lot of conventional leaders like Steven Covey and Peter Drucker for their insight and wisdom, but I especially admire Arnold Schwarzenegger. His mindset and determination have allowed him to crush all of his goals, and he is so diverse in what he has accomplished. He’s inspiring.
What do you think is the most memorable moment in your career?
I felt so accomplished when I was selected to be a Forbesauthor. I originally didn’t think I would be considered for the opportunity. This honor is a huge statement of how far Accounting Seed, my team, and I have come.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Ask yourself what you’re doing today about your goals/business. What are you going to do right now? What are you going to move aside to accomplish your goals? The truth is we assign our own limitations. If you have an objective and the passion to achieve it, you need to move these limitations and barriers aside in the moment to reach your goal.
What do you hope to accomplish in the long run?
My goal is to have Accounting Seed be the most used and highest rated accounting solution in the world. I believe this is possible because we are using the most innovative technology and putting customers first in everything we do. With the advancements we are bringing to the accounting software industry, I’m confident our product can continue spreading globally and to even more industries. Our goal is to solve problems for all of our customers and to be a recognized name for accounting solutions.
