Myanmar is a beautiful country filled with amazing people. Unfortunately, long-term civil wars among ethnic groups, created by dictators, negatively impacted the country’s education system and that, in turn, compressed individual capabilities. On top of that, the regulatory system has been destroyed, especially in food safety, and it does not stand a chance of competing with the world standards. As a result, there are no Myanmar cultural food items on retail shelves in North America, Europe, or the rest of the world.

To bridge this gap, Aye Myae, founder of A&A Greenilla Food Ltd, developed Moe, a Myanmar food processing company, with the purpose to create ‘Made in Canada’ authentic Myanmar food products readily available on retail and online shelves in North America and the rest of the world.

A&A Greenilla was incorporated in 2019 and is based in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Silicon Review contacted Aye Myae who spoke about how the company is making a difference in this segment and plans to stay at the forefront. Below is an excerpt.

Our purpose is to bring Myanmar cultural delicacies to the world.

Our ultimate goal is to establish a fair trade with millions of primary producers in Myanmar for their 100 percent organic products. That will help the socio-economic well-being of these producers who have been reeling under the military junta for over seven decades. Our vision behind the creation of A&A Greenilla is to create an environment where poor producers and rich consumers are connected with love, compassion, sharing, and caring. Furthermore, a fraction of proceeds will go to humanitarian aid in Myanmar.”

Building a Culture of Quality

Serving across North America, A&A Greenilla specializes in the development and production of delicious and authentic Myanmar foods. Using standard ingredients and following stringent safety rules of ‘Safe Food for Canadians Regulations,’ A&A customers are assured of the best products made to the highest standards of taste and food safety.

Currently, the company is focusing on B2B.

Our main strategy is to establish a commercial agri-food production system that is well-embedded in North America’s safe food regulatory system. However, as a start-up, we face a challenge — not all suppliers are willing to work with us and provide necessary documents for initial small orders. So, we strategize to use the food processing centers where they are bound to help us graduate to the commercialization stage. And we use co-packers. Although there are not many, we are lucky and found our production partners, who are well-established and willing to help us.”

We attend trade shows and trade missions to find business counterparts and partnerships in retail and distribution. As soon as we get into retail chain stores and contracts with distribution partners, we will start finding locations for our facility and more co-packers closer to the buyer’s market.”

For our retail and distribution partners, we are flexible and willing to work the packaging sizes, styles, and minimum order requirements.

A&A Greenilla products are mainly gluten-free, plant-based vegan foods, certified organic, and non-GMO. Here’s a list of a few of the products A&A offers: MohHinGar Sauce: A Condensed Fish Soup, Sprouted Yellow Pea, Crispy Chickpea Tempura, Chickpea Tofu Flour Mix, MohHinGar Soup Mix, Chicken Coconut Noodle Soup, Chicken Noodle Salads.

A&A products are produced at the federally inspected and HACCP compliant manufacturing facilities that assure stringent food safety policies and regulations for safety and quality products.

Aye Myae | Founder

Aye Myae is the founder of A&A Greenilla Food Ltd (branded as Moe). She is a Ph.D. holder in Agricultural and Resource Economics. She has over 20 years of experience in the agri-food sector and served in the public and private sectors until she started food manufacturing business in Canada. Since the inception, A&A has kept organic growth and added nine products to its portfolio. Now, the Moe brand is ready to enter further new markets across Canada, the US, and Mexico.
