Defaqto Turns Three Decades of Product Data into the Ratings Backbone beneath Britain's Financial Advice Market

Walk into a British financial adviser's office and you will likely find a Defaqto Star Rating on the screen before a client recommendation is made. The rating is not a marketing flourish. It is an assessment derived from a database covering more than 45,000 financial products and funds, refreshed continuously, and applied by more than 30% of UK advisers to serve their customers. That quiet ubiquity is the story of a company that has spent 30 years building the measurement layer beneath retail financial services.

Defaqto's proposition rests on an unusual structural position. It sits between product providers who need to understand how their propositions compare, advisers who need compliant tools and independent assessments, and consumers who need a reason to trust what they are buying. The company maintains the UK's largest financial product database, with 3.6 million product features updated daily and more than 300 financial institutions feeding market insight into the system. Its Star Ratings, Diamond Ratings, Service Ratings and Risk Ratings translate that raw volume into judgments the market can act on.

The commercial consequence is reach without direct consumer dependency. Defaqto reports that nine out of ten consumers buy Defaqto-rated products that its ratings appear on the largest price comparison websites, and that £50 billion of investments are recommended through its financial planning software each year. Under Chief Executive Officer John Milliken, appointed to the board in March 2021, the company operates as part of Fintel, the UK fintech and support services group, giving it both independence in methodology and scale in distribution.

Ratings as the Price of Market Entry

The core revenue logic is straightforward but frequently underestimated. A Star Rating is not sold to consumers; it is earned against a methodology and then licensed into the workflows of providers, advisers and comparison platforms. Providers pay for market intelligence that tells them where their propositions rank and why engagement through Matrix and Matrix 360, where market pricing, customer experience insights and competitive positioning are surfaced in near real time. Zurich's reported experience, that analysis which once took days now takes hours, illustrates the operational value: regulatory obligations such as Consumer Duty demand evidence of fair value, and evidence requires current data.

Advisers constitute a second revenue channel, one built on compliance rather than competition. Financial planning and database tools, alongside ratings and reviews, support suitability assessments and research. With more than 30% of advisers using Defaqto, the platform becomes embedded in the advice process itself a position that generates recurring subscription revenue and reinforces the ratings' authority.

The Data Moat That Compounding Builds

Defaqto's defensibility comes from time. Three decades of collection and analysis have produced coverage that a new entrant cannot replicate quickly: 18,000 funds, 6,000 home, motor and travel insurance policies, 1,000 life and protection policies, 600 wealth and pension products, and 600 current accounts and credit cards. Each product feature is tracked, each change recorded. The database is not a snapshot but a continuously updated record of how the market evolves.

That record powers the awards business, including the Insurer of the Year Awards, where more than 100 insurance brands and 26,000 customer views were assessed across car, home, pet and travel insurance. It also powers the Banking Awards, where 29 savings accounts qualified from 2,114 assessed fewer than 1.4% on rates tracked consistently across five categories over twelve months. Independent tracking, with no judges and no submissions, is the methodological claim that makes the commercial one credible.

What Independence Is Worth

Defaqto's January 2026 acquisition of a leading market pricing business signals where the company sees the next layer of value: pricing intelligence integrated with product intelligence. For insurers and providers, the combination shortens the distance between observing a competitor's position and understanding the proposition behind it.

The broader strategic question is whether independent rating infrastructure becomes more or less valuable as AI accelerates product proliferation. Defaqto's answer appears to be that it becomes more valuable, because machine-generated propositions still require human-legible judgment about quality, suitability and value. A rating is a compression of complexity into a decision and decisions, in regulated markets, must be defensible.
