The visionary leader Dr. C. Randall Harrell, Founder of RM Global^®, invented and developed patent-protected and proprietary next-generation platform technologies and a series of novel biologics for both the commercial market as well as the Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) spoke exclusively to The Silicon Review on how his company is revolutionizing the regenerative medicine sector.

Interview Highlights

Q. What methodology does RM Global^®, A Family of Regenerative Medicine Companies, implement to exceed customer expectations?

Being disruptive is the mantra of our entire company. We are not interested in being a me-too product or company. We are transforming Modern Medicine through disruptive natural regenerative medicine-based products. REGENER-EYES^®, our current flagship product, is a fantastic example of this. It is a first-in-class therapeutic and a prime example of how we are changing the standard of care. This is where we can exceed everyone's expectations, including the patients, the providers, and investors alike. We are doing something that, up to this point in time, did not exist. We back these claims up with scientific white papers that go into deep science. We also back this up with having issued patents and composition of matter patents that protect the company’s intellectual property. So, everything we do has a unique and important effect on the entire healing and regeneration process that we are trying to achieve.

Q. What do you understand by tissue regeneration? How does RM Global^® come into play in regard to this?

Whether they know it or not, everyone has some level of knowledge about tissue regeneration, which can be seen when a lizard loses their tail and grows another one, which is not unusual in nature. What is more unusual is when we start studying mammals. We were working with a group of scientists at the University of Florida who had similar interests in Regenerative Medicine, and the only mammal that they could find that had true regenerative capabilities were African Spiny Mice. Since then, there has been a lot of work done in humans to regenerate tissue for wound healing. Wound healing involves the regeneration of cells, and the process can be prolonged, difficult, or even impossible to heal. Therefore, having that capability to regenerate human tissue and seeing it heal is the goal of wound healing. This is the backbone of our flagship product and all others that will emerge to market.

Q. Do you think the RM Global^® flagship product, REGENER-EYES^®, is a game-changer? If yes, please elaborate.

Yes, I strongly feel that REGENER-EYES^®, both Professional and Lite strengths are game changers. After millions of treatments, many eye care professionals and patients alike will attest that they were able to achieve regeneration and healing of chronic wounds and dry eyes when they didn't have any other options left. They were able to achieve results that, before the use of REGENER-EYES^®, had never been seen before. This is absolutely a game changer in terms of ocular surface disease. 

Q. What are your focus areas?

Our focus is to solve any unmet medical needs, especially in the ophthalmic space, and provide invaluable solutions that were not available before this time. 

Q. How skilled is the team of experts at RM Global^®? And how do they bring value to the company?

Our team at RM Global^® is world class-experts who have a deep understanding of how regenerative medicine works. When you have two epithelial cell layers with a defined distance, and you separate those layers, the healing process will begin, and the complete healing time will vary. If you can speed that up by 50%, it has a dramatic effect on the clinical outcomes and the standard of care. You can imagine how skilled the individuals must be who are behind this breakthrough therapeutic agent.

Q. Will RM Global^® be expanding, bringing on any new products that we should be aware of?

The beauty of regenerative medicine is that it is all based on an immunomodulatory understanding of how your immune system works. So, the understanding of how this works in wound care is very similar to how it works in ophthalmology, pulmonology, and orthopedics, to name a few. We have the scientific white papers to show how this has been successfully implemented in these different fields of use and how we can change the standard of care for so many different specialties, not just ophthalmology. This goes back to the same principle of trying to regenerate tissues that are damaged and are trying to heal. We have already expanded into numerous specialties from a scientific and patent standpoint, and we will continue our work in those spaces to bring this disruptive technology to market as we scale.

Q. Can you provide us with one or two success stories describing the challenges your clients faced and how your solutions helped them overcome those challenges?

We have had, on a multitude of occasions, people having serious ulcerations on their corneal surface that are slow or impossible to heal, and after they have used our REGENER-EYES^® ophthalmic solution eyedrop, they have healed at a rapid pace because of the immunomodulator proteins that are present to help regenerate the corneal surface.

Q. What do you think are the biggest challenges your industry will face in the next five years?

The understanding of how the entire regenerative field is so different than the standard pharmaceutical model based on how the human body works right down to the molecular units of this science shifting from milligrams and micrograms to picograms, which are very extremely small units. It is from this place that we can begin to understand how the human body operates. This science, rooted in biotechnology and regenerative space, is something that most Doctors do not even fully understand because they are trained and have experience mostly in the pharmaceutical model of medicine. In that space, there are a larger number of side effects that come along with any of the positive results that may be achieved, unfortunately. The way the body really works optimally speaking is from a place of homeostasis, which is the body's process of creating a stable internal environment. If we are working to achieve homeostasis, then we can effectively minimize adverse events. There needs to be a paradigm shift from simply treating symptoms to understanding how the body truly works and how we can supplement that for faster healing by assisting the body to truly regenerate. This requires a lot of education and re-wiring of thinking, but we are dedicated to this undertaking at RM Global^®, as it is the basis of our vision... it is really our calling.

Q. About the future, where do you see RM Global^® a couple of years from now?

We have made a lot of end roads in almost every part of the human body, from the discovery and treatment of liver disease to orthopedic trauma. We are doing things in regenerative medicine that, up until now, people have said were literally impossible. We are entrenched in deep science at RM Global, and we are doing such things as growing brand new muscle and cartilage, which is a major game-changer across all industries. This type of research and development has infinite possibilities. At this point, it's all about managing our robust pipeline and bringing these advanced technologies to the patients. We are changing lives.

Q. What is your final message to The Silicon Review readers, your current and future clients, and partners?

Thinking differently is something that we have embraced. We like to get results in the fastest amount of time with the least number of adverse events. So, this is a strategy that has worked very well for us. We have platform technologies that we have developed and patented where we can achieve multiple endpoints for now and well into the future. We don't only want to do this; we are doing it from every level of the supply chain. We have everything to be a fully integrated company, from raw materials to final product, and this is extremely unique. Quality control is of utmost importance, and we have a highly skilled team to ensure that quality is non-negotiable and is of the very highest standards.

C. Randall Harrell, M.D. is the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of RM Global^®. He has worked for over 30 years to become a pioneer and visionary in the field of regenerative medicine, where his discoveries and patented platform technologies in the study of Type III human collagen, stem cells, pericytes, and novel bioengineered placental-derived biomaterials have led to the developments of first in class clinically proven regenerative medicine therapies.

Dr. Harrell started his career as a research scientist at Emory University, studying immunology. He was recruited after medical school by Dr. Michael E DeBakey, the Father of Cardiovascular Surgery, to study at the largest medical center in the world, the Texas Medical Center. He did his general surgery and plastic surgery training there, as well as ran a large burn and wound unit at the Michael E. DeBakey VA. Dr. Harrell also did a research fellowship in regenerative medicine, where he developed the first patented regenerative human Type III Human collagen dermal filler. He is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon and a member of ASPS and ASAPS.

Dr. Harrell has co-authored dozens of scientific papers and books about regenerative medicine and has lectured extensively in the US and Internationally. He also has multiple issued novel patents in the field of regenerative medicine. Dr. Harrell was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his medical missionary work in Central America.
