Skinny on Price, Heavy on Quality: Skinny Wimp Moving Co, a Phoenix-based Moving Company, Strives to Become the Largest Moving Company in the United States

thesiliconreview-lance-clauson-president-skinny-wimp-moving-co-18We strive to provide the most efficient, hardest-working and friendliest moving services treating each move as if it was our own, regardless of its size: Lance Clauson

Moving companies have been around since as early as the 19th century during the expansion of the transcontinental railroad. At that time, a typical “moving truck” consisted of a flatbed, horse-drawn cart and a group of burly men who helped stack and haul the goods. Shortly after, the first “moving van” was invented using air-cooled engines. Obviously, the industry has advanced dramatically since that time.

Moving companies today are run by technology; gone are the days of simply calling to arrange a moving van. Now consumers are relying on online moving companies and resources to do the work for them.

Skinny Wimp Moving Co. is a full service licensed moving company serving residential and commercial customers in 19 cities across the country. In addition to providing complete moving services, Skinny Wimp also offers packing and unpacking before and after moves.

The company was incorporated in 2012 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lance  Clauson, Skinny Wimp Moving Co. President, spoke exclusively to The Silicon Review. Below is an excerpt.

Why was the company set up? And how did you expand your company and its offerings over the years?

Based on hearing constant complaints from friends and family about how terrible their moving experiences were, I decided to bring a whole new level of quality to the moving industry. Simply on strategic marketing and top-shelf quality, we have been able to grow to be one of the fastest growing companies in the country.

How successful was your first project roll on? Share the experience.

Our first project was a major success – the customer told us that the move we gave her was by far the best she had ever received. All we did was hustle; we did not milk the clock one second. We were extremely careful with her belongings; we wrapped everything to ensure there were no damages or scratches. Most of all we were friendly, we always smiled and made her feel as if we were friends.

How often do you innovate? Is it only when there is a need in the market?

We are always looking to innovate; from GPS tracking on the trucks, cubic square foot calculations to tell us exactly how many trucks and movers a customer move will need; we are always looking to improve and make the move go faster and smoother.

In addition, our team is able to handle any type of home move – whether it’s an entire home or just a piano move. We offer a flexible schedule to meet your needs and are available on evenings and weekends. All of our movers are fully trained, licensed, insured and uniformed. We are determined to live up to our reputation of being the movers who care.

We put anything slightly fragile such as washer/dryers, refrigerators and china cabinets on one inch thick cushioned pads for extra protection from the rough roads. We also use our customized and exclusive full truck shelving system so we don’t stack anything directly on top of these fragile possessions to prevent broken parts and scratches. Not only does this protect your goods, it also maximizes space by allowing us to safely and securely stack to the top of the truck.

What are the biggest assets to your organization? What would they be and why?

Our core values are summed up as: unique customer experience strategy, pride in our work, integrity, collaborative teams, fulfilling environment.

Every executive, team, and individual adopts these values as their perspective when applying efforts to every project and in every aspect of developing customer relationships. Operating at this level of understanding and perspective keeps focus on our larger goals.

Perhaps the most important advice I can provide is to surround yourself with a passionate group of talented people who aren’t afraid to argue their opinions. By checking your own ego at the front door and fostering that in your culture, you will ultimately make better and more informed decisions.

As a question on sustainability, where do you see your company a couple of years from now?

Recently, we have started franchising; this has been a positive attribution to the overall quality and growth of the company. We know when an owner is running a location rather than a branch manager, the customer service is extraordinarily better.

We currently have 19 locations franchised around the country, and we will continue to expand in the coming years.
